When Is the Right Time to Buy a Boat?

The economy feels questionable, the job market is a seesaw, and if you look at the headlines, it seems like the world is constantly on fire. In this climate, is it actually a good time to buy a boat?

We’ve officially wrapped up our show season for the year, and the trend was unmistakable. Venues were packed, and our inboxes were flooded with hesitant buyers. These are people who recognize the value and feel comfortable with where interest rates have settled, yet they still choose to wait.

Uncertainty has a price. Early-season deals—including rate incentives, extended warranties, and the guarantee of having a boat ready for the first warm weekend—were often sidelined by a mountain of "social media anxiety." The internet is currently a roar of speculation on when to make the right move. It’s mostly noise—internet static designed to hijack your attention.

To cut through that static and decide if 2026 is your year, you must weigh these three factors:

1. Can You Truly Afford It?

No one knows your financial boundaries better than you. Boating is a lifestyle, and much like parenthood, it comes with its share of "unexpected" expenses. Beyond the monthly payment, you must account for fuel, insurance, storage, and maintenance.

The Pro Tip: A solid rule of thumb is to budget 10% to 15% of the boat’s value annually for operating costs. If those numbers fit comfortably within your margins, the financial "static" of the outside world should stay in the background.

2. The Cost of Lost Time

This is the hidden tax most buyers forget to calculate. While you wait for the "perfect" economic headline or for interest rates to drop another quarter-point, the calendar keeps turning.

You can negotiate a price, but you cannot negotiate for more time. You can’t get back the summer your kids were the "right age" to learn to ski, or the sunset cruises you missed because you were busy refreshing a financial news feed. Furthermore, we are currently in a favorable window for borrowing. We are in a low-interest-rate period that won't last forever—don't be the one left on the shore when rates inevitably climb again. In five years, you won't remember the $50 you saved on a monthly payment, but you will certainly regret the seasons you spent stuck on the dock

3. Market Reality vs. Market Rumor

The "pandemic premium" is a thing of the past. The 2026 market has stabilized into one of the most balanced environments for buyers in years. Inventory is finally available, and manufacturers are offering "peace of mind" incentives—like better warranties and rigging deals—that simply didn't exist two years ago.

The Bottom Line!

If your finances are stable and your heart is on the water, stop waiting for the world to stop spinning. It never will. Make the move, leave the noise at the shoreline, and start living the life you’ve been speculating about.
